Taal Volcano

I’ve been to Tagaytay several times, but it took me two years to finally act on the urge to trek Taal and check out its crater.

Taal is one of the active volcanoes in the Philippines, last erupted in 1977.

A view from Tagaytay. Taal's close proximity to populated areas is a danger, esp. with its threat of eruption.

It was also named "a volcano inside a volcano" because locals believed that the lake surrounding it was also once a crater of a volcano.

Tourists crossing Taal lake.

The lake so calm that it reflects what's on the surface perfectly.

The trek on foot will take an hour or so, be prepared as there is only one trail for man and horse on the dirt road.

The 30-mins horseride is the way to go to enjoy the view, which also seemed to me a bright idea then under the scorching sun and the heat from the ground.

Almost near the viewpoint, where you can see steam released from the sides of the passageway.

The infamous crater --- at last!

Enjoy the view while you're at it. You can't actually stay that long on top, personally i felt myself burning and actually smell it since you'll be breathing in a lot of sulfur.

The view up close the side of the crater.

i honestly don't know what this is - it's shaped like a skull though.

The side of the crater in a more colorful perspective. ^o^

Taal is actually on alert level 2 this June 2010, meaning - and i qoute - that it is undergoing magmatic intrusion that could eventually lead to an eruption.

Must-haves are water, water, water and every sun protection available. Hat and face mask are offered for rent and sale, respectively, but better bring your own.

Lyka, a 6-year-old pony. Locals prefer using female horses on the trek because they are well-tempered than the males --- well that says a lot. ;p

a friendly shade to cool you off

oh and if ever you decide to take the horses, it comes with a rider so be sure to shell out cash 1) to buy em a drink upon reaching the viewpoint and 2) for the tip that they will ask you at the end of the trip.

a quite corner to enjoy the view --- Taal Yacht Club
